joining us with more. >> reporter: jessica, investigators are on the scene trying to find out the cause of the fire. they know it started on the fifth floor and went up through the stairwell. the fire was so intense that one person jumped out the window. >> there was one resident, who did jump from the interior of the building to escape the fire. >> reporter: that man died a short time later. four others are in critical condition, including a child. eight people were transported to lock a hospitals. 40 others were treated on the scene. >> got my girlfriend out of bed and ran through. she got her and the cat. she's in the hospital and i'm going to see her right now. >> reporter: witnesses say they woke up to the sound of alarms. >> i heard screaming. so i opened up the door and saw on my floor there was furniture in the hallway that was on fire. >> reporter: this man lives on the fifth floor and he says the night before he noticed the furniture in the common area, close to where the fire started. >> it was a lot of smoke, and my hall was pretty lit up with flames. yeah, pretty scary. >>

>>> hello. i'm jc hayward. thank you for joining us. a developing story from bethesda, maryland is topping our newscast this afternoon. montgomery county police say they are looking for a man who took a shot at his exgirlfriend this morning. the woman was not harmed, but joshua prince is considered armed and dangerous. he is on the loose with a high- powered rifle. bruce leshan has more information in this live report. bruce? >> reporter: this is so close totaledden middle school and walter johnson high school that police ordered both schools locked down, code blue. that has been lifted now because police think it is more likely than not that he has fled the area but police are on the scene in case he comes back. it happened right behind me. police say the 32-year-old josh la prince fired at at least one shot at his exgirlfriend who was outside of her apartment on rock forest drive. she ran for her life, banging on neighbors ' doors pleading for someone to take her in. she had apparently got an restraining order against prince a week ago. tactical teams surrounded the area but t

on the streets. what more can you tell us? >> eight people were transported to the hospital. five to the burn unit and one with a child. two people are in critical condition. i want to show you the scene down the street here. there are still some fire crews inside the building. it's an eight-story apartment building and they believe it started on the fifth floor. everyone is out of the building. firefighters say they have it under control but there are still hot spots. they believe the fire started in a common area. they had to use ladders to rescue people. >> i walked out and saw black smoke just like over, covering the ceiling and then like that black smoke like there was orange flames reflecking off of it. it was so hot one person had to jump out of a window. that's one of the people in critical condition. they don't know if that person will pull through. reporting live in northwest washington, lindsey mastis, 9 news now. >>> we are hoping to learn more from police about the deadly shooting on u and 88th -- 11th street northwest. it happened during the middle of the day. police say at leas

that they have interrupted, one that would affect several countries in the west including the u.s., also britain, france and germany. people are undoubtedly nervous but they also say there is no evidence at this time any plot or any attacks were imminent and the proof of that is that terror levels across the west have not been raised, with one notable exception, that is in france, where there have been a number of terror alerts over the last few weeks, including one just yesterday at the eiffel tower, which police cleared and the area around it. but found no bombs. a train station earlier in the week was also cleared. france has a specific threat it is worried about particularly from north africa because of the discussion in france of the laws being passed to ban burqas, burqa wearing among islamic women. what is happening, the terrorist sources say -- anti-terrorist sources say, attacks were planned oomg those that took place in mumbai, india, where commandos landed moved into areas of public populations and train stations, hotels, et cetera, and caused a lot of damage and killed a lot of peopl
